Diet: Illness - taking extra care
Illness and stress can cause a rise in blood phytanic acid levels and this can cause problems if neglected.
- See your doctor if you feel unwell and contact your dietitian urgently.
- Take extra care not to lose weight. If you lose your appetite or cannot eat properly, your GP can prescribe a nutritional supplement e.g. Fresubin sip feeds (made by Fresenius Kabi); Ensure, Enlive, Ensure Plus (made by Abbott Laboratories); Fortijuice, Fortimel, Fortisip (made by Nutricia Clinical Care); Clinutren Fruit, Clinutren 1.5, Build-up (made by Nestle Clinical Nutrition) which you should take, as well as food, until your appetite is back to normal and your weight has stabilised.
- If you are in hospital and you need to be fed by tube, the following enteral feeds are suitable Fresubin 1000 Complete (all other Fresenius enteral feeds are not suitable); Nutrison feed range (not Infratrini); Clinutren Iso; Abbott/Ross feeds (not Optimental, not Oxepa).
- If you are in hospital and need to be intravenously fed, Intralipid and
Structolipid are both suitable fat sources. Omegaven is not suitable for
people with adult Refsum's disease.
